I've got a question for you.
2
:Have you ever delivered a talk or
a presentation, and even if you
3
:thought everything had gone well,
it just didn't land, or at least not
4
:the way you thought it was going to,
you didn't get the results that you
5
:thought you would get, you might have
been clear, maybe really confident.
6
:You may even have been
funny, but something was off.
7
:So what have I told you that it might
not be your content or your delivery,
8
:but a hidden charisma killer that
you didn't even know was there.
9
:In this episode, I'm going to share with
you three charisma killers that I see
10
:all the time working with clients, plus
stories of real people with their names
11
:changed, of course, who overcame them?
12
:So let's dive in.
13
:My name's John.
14
:I'm a keynote and presentation coach,
and this episode is something of a warmup
15
:for a special that I've got coming up.
16
:It's called Charisma Killers.
17
:It will be a live event on LinkedIn
and YouTube, and I'll give you more
18
:information about that a bit later on.
19
:But on that training, I will
be revealing the seven biggest
20
:charisma killers that sabotage your
stage presence, your influence,
21
:and even your long-term bookings.
22
:So today I want to give you a
taste by walking through three of
23
:the most common charisma killers.
24
:They are overexplaining or
over teaching incongruent
25
:energy and a lack of curiosity.
26
:So let's start with one that I see almost
constantly from speakers, especially
27
:with a training or teaching a background.
28
:Let me introduce you to Tina, and
that's not her real name, but she is
29
:a real client who came to me because
her keynotes weren't landing and Tina
30
:was and is from a training background.
31
:Highly experienced and
incredibly knowledgeable.
32
:Great at what she does, but when she
got on the stage to deliver a keynote,
33
:she couldn't switch off the teacher.
34
:She'd walk her audience through every
concept, explain every angle, and
35
:overfill the talk with content or
value as she was referring to it as.
36
:The result, her audience was
overwhelmed with information,
37
:maybe even confused, but certainly
somewhat disengaged because of it.
38
:And she ended up being frustrated
because she knew that her content
39
:was good and the impact was there,
the transformation was there.
40
:But here's the thing, training and
keynote speaking are not the same game.
41
:They are different beasts.
42
:Training is more about clarity and depth.
43
:You have the opportunity to go
deeper and share more, teach more
44
:keynotes, have more of a reliance
on energy, emotion, connection,
45
:and inspiration to take action.
46
:So she was bringing the right skills into
the wrong moment, and she's not alone.
47
:Another speaker I worked with not
that long ago, we call her Kay.
48
:She also came from a teaching background,
and what she was finding was that she
49
:wasn't really getting rebooked and
her workshops weren't really landing.
50
:So once we worked together to
switch off teach mode and switch
51
:on connection mode, things started
to change and pretty fast as well.
52
:In fact, within weeks of us having started
working together, she was reporting back.
53
:The feedback she was getting from events
was much better, especially when she
54
:went back to an event where she was
rebooked to speak, she was told by the
55
:event manager that the transformation in
her content and delivery was exceptional
56
:and was definitely a big improvement.
57
:So overteaching is a charisma killer,
and if your audience feels like
58
:they're just being overloaded or
force fed information and content,
59
:it will ultimately shut them down.
60
:It's too much for their brains to take
in, in the scope of a keynote talk.
61
:They don't really feel seen, they don't
feel connected, they don't feel a need
62
:for more information if you've delivered.
63
:Everything already in the keynote,
even if they forget most of it,
64
:the moment they walk out the
door, it's deadly for charisma.
65
:So let's talk about incongruent energy
and let me tell you about Anthony.
66
:And Anthony was a passionate speaker.
67
:Still is.
68
:He masked his nerves by going full
motivational speaker mode, and he
69
:was not a motivational speaker.
70
:Now, it's always good to bring a bit
of that motivational speaker energy
71
:where you can for certain parts of
the talk, the high energy, the big
72
:smiles, the enthusiastic delivery
was great, but none of it was real.
73
:It wasn't authentic to him.
74
:The more he tried to pump up his
energy, the more disconnected his
75
:audiences felt and the more disconnected
he felt from what he was doing.
76
:So he looked the part, he maybe even
sounded it to some degree, but something
77
:wasn't quite clicking, and audiences
can always feel that if there is an
78
:incongruence there, if how you are
trying to be perceived doesn't really
79
:match up with the general energy
or demeanor, people will notice it,
80
:even if they can't quite explain how.
81
:That's incongruent energy.
82
:We've probably all encountered
that at some point.
83
:We've either seen it in others or we've
experienced it for ourselves as well.
84
:So it's when your outer delivery doesn't
match your inner emotional state.
85
:Or the emotional tone of your message,
so you can see it in people smiling
86
:whilst they're delivering serious
news or overly animated delivery
87
:for a subtle or intimate message.
88
:Fake confidence, masking
fear or insecurity.
89
:It creates cognitive dissonance.
90
:And audiences might not know why,
but they will feel that something's
91
:off and they'll start to disconnect.
92
:And once Anthony learned how to ground
his energy, match his delivery to the
93
:moment and the content, And Show up with
more of an authentic emotional presence.
94
:He became magnetic.
95
:Authenticity is charisma and
congruence is how you deliver it.
96
:Now the third charisma killer is one I've
experienced myself, especially from my
97
:time in storytelling and standup comedy.
98
:Way back when I used to think charisma
was all about impressing people, looking
99
:sharp, being witty, getting the laughs.
100
:But here's what I learned.
101
:Unfortunately, the hard way, but hard
lessons are ones that last for sure.
102
:Charisma isn't about being interesting,
it's about being interested.
103
:So in standup, the best
comedians listen to the room.
104
:They're tuned in.
105
:Curious, responsive.
106
:And I'm not talking about engaging
with hecklers, although that can be
107
:a part of it, but I'm really talking
about noticing energy shifting, maybe
108
:changing a delivery just based on the
energy of the room that you are in.
109
:When I shifted from more of a look
at me to let me really connect
110
:with you, everything changed.
111
:Energy shifted for me and
audiences leaned in more.
112
:I'll say this as well, it made me a
little less scared of going up on stage
113
:because I wasn't there so much for me
or for what I was going to get outta
114
:the experience I was more interested
in delivering something good to my
115
:audience and connecting with them.
116
:And when the focus is on things that
aren't based on how good you are or
117
:what you can deliver, or the accolades
that you might get afterwards, if
118
:you do a great job, things shift.
119
:Whether you're speaking on stage or in a
podcast or one-on-one, curiosity connects.
120
:Conversation particularly, you know,
if you want to connect with people
121
:who might be giving you referrals or
additional bookings, having genuine
122
:curiosity in people enables you to deepen
connections and have people feel that
123
:you really cared and really heard them.
124
:When you genuinely want to understand your
audience, when you adapt to them in the
125
:moment, they will feel it, and that's what
charisma looks like from the inside out.
126
:So let's quickly recap the three
Charisma Killers to look out for here
127
:over explaining or over teaching, which
is turning your keynote into more of
128
:a training session and trying to pack
everything in to 45 to 60 minutes or
129
:however long you're doing, sometimes
delivering super long keynotes just to
130
:try and fit everything in unnecessarily.
131
:Most keynotes probably shouldn't be
much over 45 to 60 minutes unless you
132
:are actually being asked to deliver
something that is longer than that.
133
:Incongruent energy, saying one thing
and looking or feeling or showing
134
:something a little different.
135
:Picking up a, um, having people's
emotional radar picking up and
136
:something isn't quite right, and that
lack of curiosity, focusing on your
137
:performance instead of connection.
138
:So these are just three of the seven
charisma killers that I'll be sharing
139
:and working with you to fix in my
upcoming live session, Charisma
140
:Killers, How to Spot and Stop What's
Sabotaging Your Stage Presence.
141
:So.
142
:It's gonna be free, it's gonna
be occurring monthly as well.
143
:So if you can't get on the one on
the 14th of August, there will be
144
:monthly repetitions of the event
for you to be able to come back.
145
:Or you can maybe try and find
the recording on either my
146
:LinkedIn profile or on YouTube.
147
:So in that session, which will
be around 45 minutes, I'm gonna
148
:show you how to identify which
charisma killers are affecting you.
149
:And what to do to fix them.
150
:It's gonna be free.
151
:It will be live.
152
:You'll be able to ask
questions at the end as well.
153
:And it's packed with practical insight.
154
:You'll find in the YouTube
description or show notes you feel
155
:on the audio podcast, a link for
you to register for the event now.
156
:And if you are listening after the
14th of August, well just make sure
157
:you're following me on YouTube or
LinkedIn and you will get notified
158
:the next time the event is running.
159
:Now if you want to increase your
bookings, re bookings, referrals,
160
:or just feel more magnetic when you
speak, you won't want to miss this.
161
:And hey, if any of these charisma
killers hit home for you, I
162
:would love to hear about it.
163
:So drop a comment or message me
directly and I'll look forward
164
:to seeing you at the live event.
